Argentina, the runner-up to Germany three years ago in Brazil, qualifies 3rd in South America qualifying, with the top four teams advancing automatically to Russia 2018. The fifth-place team can advance by winning an intercontinental playoff against Oceania champion New Zealand. The Argentines next play Tuesday against Ecuador in the thin air of Quito in the Andes.
Brazil already has qualified. Uruguay, Argentna and Colombia currently round out the top four while Chile misses out after a disastrous defeat in Brazil.

The U.S., third in the North and Central American and Caribbean region, was in safe hands to qualify. As the Americans won 4-0 against Panama in Orlando on Friday and need a win or draw on Tuesday at Trinidad and Tobago, which lost 3-1 at Mexico on Friday. El Tri has clinched a World Cup berth but the revers was the case as USA lost 3-1 to Trinidad & Tobago.
CHILE, GHANA, USA & NETHERLANDS misses out as ICELAND & PANAMA made it directly.
