The contenders for The Best FIFA Women's Player 2017 have been revealed. The players listed below remain in the running for this coveted award, having been selected by a panel of women's football experts.

The Candidates
Lucy BRONZE

The England full-back has built on her impressive performances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ to firmly establish herself as one of the world’s best defenders. An assured presence at the back, Bronze is both reliable and not afraid to press forwards to help her team-mates in attack. It has been another golden year for Bronze, following on from a league and league cup double with Manchester City Women in 2016. The Citizens reached the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finals in their debut appearance, before Bronze scored in the FA Women’s Cup Final at Wembley Stadium to help her side lift the trophy for the first time. On the international stage, she was named in the UEFA Team of the Tournament at the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 in the Netherlands, where she helped the Lionesses reached the semi-finals of a second major tournament in succession.
Deyna CASTELLANOS

Since starring at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Jordan 2016, where she spearheaded Venezuela’s challenge with such élan that she collected the adidas Bronze Ball and the adidas Bronze Boot, Deyna Castellanos has continued her footballing education in the USA. After a spell with college team Florida State Seminoles in Division I of the NCAA, she joined Santa Clarita Blue Heat in United Women’s Soccer at the start of the year. Not content with making the UWS All-League First Team at the end of the season, Castellanos was also voted the league’s Player of the Year. An instinctive, free-scoring striker, the 18-year-old has plenty of power and pace to go with her impressive array of skills.
Pernille HARDER

Already labelled a "world-class, hyper-talented player" by Sweden legend Pia Sundhage, Pernille Harder gave even more weight to those words of praise in 2016/17. The Denmark forward reached a whole new level, notably joining Wolfsburg last year after four seasons at Linkoping, but it was on the international stage that she truly shone brightest. Scorer of seven goals in eight qualifiers for UEFA Women's EURO 2017, she pipped even that performance by leading her side to the tournament final. Harder was on target in the decider as Denmark lost 4-2 to hosts the Netherlands, and she was the soul of the Scandinavian team as they enjoyed their best ever showing – most memorably knocking out Germany to prevent the holders from winning a seventh consecutive title. Still only 24, Harder has already earned herself a place in the history of Danish women's football, and she has plenty of years ahead to bolster her legacy.
Samantha KERR

A lethal goal-getter, Australian Sam Kerr is among the all-time leading scorers in the USA’s National Women’s Soccer League, where she currently plies her trade with New Jersey side Sky Blue FC. A senior international with the Matildas who made her debut as a 15-year-old in 2009, Kerr played an integral role in leading Australia to their first silverware in seven years. The forward finished as the leading goalscorer at the 2017 Tournament of Nations with five, as Australia saw off USA, Brazil and Japan to win the competition. Known for her speed, skill and finishing prowess, Kerr will no doubt be a key player for the Matildas in their AFC Asian Cup campaign in Jordan next year, as they look to avenge their 2014 final defeat against Japan.
Carli LLOYD

USA colossal name in the women’s game, Carli Lloyd was crowned The Best FIFA Women's Player 2016 after yet another successful year. The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup™ winner and two-time Women’s Olympic Football Tournament gold medallist joined her first club abroad this year when she signed a loan deal with Manchester City Women in February. Lloyd and City narrowly missed out on the Women’s Super League Spring Series, finishing second to Chelsea on goal difference. But in her four-month stint, Lloyd helped the Blues to the 2016/17 UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finals and lifted the FA Women’s Cup for the first time in front of a 35,000 crowd at Wembley.
Dzsenifer MAROZSAN

No list of Germany’s most talented female footballers would be complete without Dzsenifer Marozsan, who regularly captivates crowds with her pace, invention and intelligent, accurate passing game. The sharp-shooting midfield playmaker controls the ball so well that it enables her to rethink situations as they unfold, while she can decide matches with a single solo run or perfectly-judged shot. After moving to French giants Olympique Lyon, Marozsan crowned her first season abroad with a remarkable league, cup and UEFA Champions League treble. She was also named Germany captain in October 2016.
Lieke MARTENS

It has been a season like no other for the Netherlands’ Lieke Martens. After announcing that she was leaving Rosengard to sign for Barcelona, the midfielder excelled as her national team triumphed at UEFA Women’s EURO 2017. Voted Player of the Tournament, which was held on home soil, the vastly talented 24-year-old left winger scored three goals and provided two assists, though there was more to her performance than mere statistics. Dominant on her flank, Martens proved the most elusive of dribblers and set the tempo for her side, showing her innate ability to read the game.
Vivianne MIEDEMA

Vivianne Miedema played a crucial role in the Netherlands’ triumph at the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017. The striker scored a matchwinning goal in the semi-final against England and netted a similarly decisive brace in the final against Denmark to lead the Oranje Leeuwinnen to their first title. The two-footed forward made her international debut at just 17 and played at her first FIFA Women’s World Cup™ at Canada 2015 aged 18. At club level, the 21-year-old made the switch to Arsenal Women in England this summer after spending three successful seasons with Bayern Munich, where she made 61 appearances, scored 35 goals and won two league titles. She found the target 14 times in the most recent Women’s Bundesliga campaign to finish as second-highest goalscorer.
Wendie RENARD

Lyon's second consecutive treble owed much to the club's indispensable defender and captain Wendie Renard. The 6'2 Martinique-born centre-back was integral to another spectacular season for OL, with her tenacity in defence, clean passing and aerial strength helping the club defend their titles in the UEFA Women's Champions League, French championship and French Cup. While her height made her an attacking threat, Renard weighed in with six league goals, it was her composure and experience that counted most as Lyon retained the Champions League and French Cup after tense finals against Paris Saint-Germain that went all the way to penalties. With France, Renard also tasted triumph in the SheBelieves Cup in March and played a key role in a ten-month unbeaten run. Her almost perfect season nonetheless came to an end with a quarter-final exit at UEFA Women's EURO 2017 in July.
Jodie TAYLOR

One of the stand-out players at the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017, England striker Jodie Taylor was lethal in front of goal in the Netherlands. The Lionesses striker kicked off her tournament in emphatic fashion by netting a hat-trick against rivals Scotland in her opening group stage game, becoming the first England player to score a hat-trick in a major tournament since Gary Lineker at the 1986 FIFA World Cup™. Taylor picked up the Golden Boot at Netherlands 2017 as the tournament’s leading goalscorer, bagging five in four games as England reached the semi-finals. A key component of Arsenal Women’s attack, Taylor will no doubt be an integral figure for the London side as they look to claim their first Women’s Super League title since 2012.
